A man has been seriously injured in what police are treating as a racist attack in Edinburgh city centre.
The 50-year-old suffered a serious facial injury after being grabbed by a man and repeatedly hit over the head with a bottle in Dumbiedykes Road.
The man then ran off leaving the victim to be helped in the street by a member of the public.
He contacted police and was taken to hospital where he remains for treatment to his injuries.
Lothian and Borders Police has appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
Det Con Fiona McEwan said: “This appears to be a random and entirely unprovoked assault and we are currently treating the attack as racially motivated.
“We are appealing for anyone who was in the area around midnight this morning and remembers seeing anything suspicious to come forward.
“In particular, we would like to trace the man who came to his aid following the assault.”
The attacker is described as being about 5ft 5in, thin and was wearing a cap.
